Course Descriptions
BALANCED MASTERY™ IN WORK & LIFE (“Flagship” Course)
Are You Obsessed, Possessed, or ‘Blessed’ in Your Achievement?
Rick’s Professional Balance was one of the first hardcover books to connect balance with achievement. This connection is called Balanced Mastery and teaches how balance is the tool and achievement is the goal. Equilibrium in your life is one of the essential ingredients to your business, academic, and personal success. This program shows how to link personal and work priorities to approach mastery in selected areas of achievement. The Mastery Circle™ assessment tool gives a visual and quantitative picture of your five top priorities in life. The 10 Achievement Factors for mastery will show how the highest performers keep their equilibrium as they attain high goals. This is a cornerstone course for those wishing to sustain accomplishment and enjoy the ride.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS, CASES, & SECRETS
Advanced Tools & Experiences for Managers & Team Leaders
If management includes planning, organizing, directing, and controlling what more could leaders do? Even organized plans go wrong. Sometimes large organizations are well-directed and controlled but lose ground in the marketplace. It is the leader who gives the vision and the reason for all the management activities. After a vision or mission is crystallized so that all can see it, the leader sets the example. The Griggs Achievement version of Leadership Skills tackles methods, theories, and intense case studies. Attendees mold valuable theory into practical outlets. Our Team Survival Simulations force each person to show their natural reactions. The simulation de-brief (and filming) lead to lasting improvements.

HIGH PERFORMING TEAMS
Team Tools for Communication, Risk Taking, & Synergy
We are thrilled to offer a special day of learning and personal growth. Team Development programs come in many varieties. For this session you won’t be asked to do too many “weird” things. Since 1983 we’ve chosen to offer classes, speeches, and books based on what we call Balanced Mastery. Well-rounded people are often the best innovators. We think this applies to teams as well. Building innovative teams helps you to triumph with your current goals and to approach mastery for your future. This Griggs Achievement course adds to personal competence and to team success. People and other departments around you will see and feel the difference.

COMMUNICATION & INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Essentials for Reducing Conflict & Growing as a Team
The best leaders refresh their communication skills every few years. This Griggs Achievement classic covers the standard communication model with its sender, receiver, and feedback loop. The course builds upon these essentials and then applies them to real work issues of teamwork and understanding people. Everyone appreciates a “refresher” on what it takes to get your message across accurately. This course is intensely participative and shows how to connect great communication skills to mastering change and success with people.

ASSERTIVENESS SKILL
Avoiding Passive & Aggressive Behavior with True Assertiveness
True assertiveness falls into that magical area between being too passive and too aggressive. The way to test is to see of your rights are balanced with the rights of others. All assertiveness starts with self-expression but it doesn’t mean that you always assert your rights. Sometimes it’s better to keep quiet. This course shows when it’s best to speak up and when you might hold your tongue. Behavior change comes with practice. In order to become more assertive, instead of too passive or aggressive, this class offers several chances to practice the skills of becoming an appropriately assertive person at home, at work, and in life.

QUID NOVI (What’s New) INNOVATION STRATEGY
Mastering Blue Ocean Value for Yourself & Your Customers
Lasting success comes from innovation. Read the news, watch the reports, study the market… those who succeed innovate! Based on the books, Blue Ocean Strategy and The Book of Invention & Triumph in Teams, here’s how to add value to make yourself stand out for customers, employers, and investors. We say that balance is the tool, achievement is the goal… this is Balanced Mastery. A strategy for innovation combines mastery and balance in a ‘Blue Ocean’ of success.
“The books Blue Ocean Strategy and The Book of Invention are two of the best books I’ve read. (I wrote the other one!) We must stop swimming in red oceans of competition and courageously enter a new space of clear value to employers and customers—a triumph of opportunity.” —Rick Griggs

PRESENTATION & FACILITATION SKILLS
How to Lead the Team & Excel in Public Speaking
Public speaking is tough! Even in a web-based and virtual world we still need face time for persuading, calming, and motivating others as we sell our ideas, products, and services. This Griggs Achievement program is light on lecture and heavy on repeated practice. Most people need “mileage” to perfect their speaking skills under physiological stress. In the full-day version of the course, each person is filmed multiple times during the day. Results emerge through self-critique, group feedback, and instructor coaching. Special features include strategic ways of dividing people into groups for purposes of discussion, rejuvenation, or even consensus building around hostile issues. The course teaches facilitators how to manage the ‘edges’ of a room and ways of perfecting body language to encourage people to speak up. Since using something visual tremendously increases communication, the course teaches how PowerPoint presentations can be improved via readability, visibility, and pacing.

DEVELOPING & RETAINING KEY EMPLOYEES
Being the Organization of Choice
During good times and bad the best organizations keep the best people. This course teaches how to build a foundation that attracts talent, a strategy that engages talent, and an execution plan that keeps the commitments made to your talent. People want to be loyal. Loyalty results from pride, ownership, and a healthy dose of challenge. This course shows how the ingredients may change but the formula is constant. People move for recognition, appreciation, and challenge. Money plays a part, but it’s trickier than many imagine. Targeted retention implies that everyone is NOT treated exactly the same—that’s why many good people leave. Those who best support the current and future goals of the organization must be retained. This course shows you how.

VISION & CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
Attitudes & Practices That Thrill Customers
People recognize good customer service when they see it. Whether it’s a refresher or a skill builder, this course raises the level of service, respect, and satisfaction your customers will report. Quite often the attitudes of the “team” determine how much the customer gets. A dysfunctional team cannot sustain good service. This program fixes broken teams, enhances great teams, and teaches the tools, practices, and attitudes that thrill customers. A clear vision defines the type of service that will satisfy and even thrill customers. Since we cannot please everyone it’s smart to outline what kind of customers will lead to success and learn to take good care of them.

STRESS & DIFFICULT SITUATIONS
Handle Stress While Resolving Chaos & Conflict
This course is another of our combined sessions. This one is on stress, emotional intelligence, and difficult situations. Stress and mastery mean different things to you, your team members, and other departments. Our aim is to explore these different meanings, identify the best ones for you, and practice them. Your time and focused attention will pay off with lower stress, a good understanding of emotional intelligence, and great ways to deal with difficult people and situations. A single item learned in this Griggs program can save you and your team lots of time struggling with stress. This investment pays off retention, efficiency and profits. You make the call.

MANAGING CHANGE & LIFE PRIORITIES
Handling Change, Time, & Career Priorities
Wherever you turn you will see the constant movement of goals, plans, people, etc. that we label as change. Our Griggs Achievement version of this popular topic will include some lecture and research mixed in with a lot of your involvement. We will ask you to examine case studies and to even role-play a few scenarios that involve people in the middle of change. The life priorities section will refresh and re-emphasize several Balanced Mastery concepts. As change circles and engulfs some, others have a solid handle on their life priorities. This gives you and your employees a compass for finding direction and even meaning. We assure you, the session will be fun and useful.

NEGOTIATION, CHARACTER, & ETHICS
Tact & Diplomacy for Career & Corporate Solutions
Most negotiations favor the person or team that spends the right amount of time getting ready. How much is enough? No one knows! We do know how much is not enough. Winging it and “shooting from the hip” may appear to save you time but it’s time, energy, and success lost in the long run. This Griggs Achievement course deals with win-win strategies, BATNA’s, concessions, identifying manipulation and bluffs, and other high integrity tools for the conscientious negotiator. Everyone benefits from a review of what builds character and what defines ethics. This course fills a need for reminding us how and why we negotiate.

CONFIDENCE & CHARISMA IN LEADERSHIP
Superb Leadership with Courage, Style & Forceful Impact
The difference between confidence and self-confidence is where they are focused. Confidence is forward focused on the world around you. Self-confidence is concerned with your personal reaction to past internal and external events. Confidence predicts a bit of the future based on information. Self-confidence predicts a personal reaction based on current feelings and emotions. The charismatic leader we are studying is trustworthy and considerate of their followers’ needs and desires. The best leaders resist using charisma for personal desires or selfish purposes. Their charisma connects individual people and teams to a worthy, future set of events. Charismatic leaders put the fingerprints of the vision on people’s emotions.

VIRTUAL PRESENTATION SKILLS
Tools & Techniques for Remote Presentations
This live course has been custom tailored for Mastering Virtual Presentations—phone, computer, video-conference. This includes traditional speaking tools, audience management, self-control, time management, and outcome control. The session will briefly feature reading an audience, handling tough questions, and even working with a partner. Since using something visual tremendously increases communication, the course explores how imagery (stories, photos, remote references) can be employed. This type of program serves to complement full-day speaking programs, the speech component of the Griggs Mastery Academy, and the “Speaking of Wednesdays” Presentation Skills series.

THE EIGHT ARTICLES OF MASTERY
Methods, Attitudes, & Habits of the Masters Throughout History
The foundation of Balanced Mastery is laid by three core concepts. For over 30 years Griggs Achievement has taught that 1) your choice of achievement styles (Obsessed, Possessed, Balanced); 2) the life priorities you select (Mastery Circle); and 3) your skill at sustained achievement (10 Achievement Factors) will determine how far you go in life and how much you enjoy the journey. In building upon the foundation, The Eight Articles of Mastery will leverage your understanding of habit-building and reward you for the work it takes to turn tools into habits. As you learn these fascinating applications and practice them with variety, consistency, and moderation you set yourself up to become a true master! But you’ll remember, “The Amateur proclaims mastery while the master toils on.” (Triumph in Teams).

PERSONAL WELLNESS
The Balanced Mastery Approach to Health, Wellness, & Stress Reduction
Wellness is more than the absence of disease. It involves personal responsibility for one’s health. In the context of Balanced Mastery, wellness means taking care of your top life priorities, leveraging skills of achievement, and learning to approach mastery. Rick Griggs’ timeless book, Personal Wellness, makes the course sizzle with valuable tips and surprising motivation. Modules include the 28-day program for habit building, the first published introduction to Macro Balance™ (now the Mastery Circle), and how to support others with their aspirations for building a healthy lifestyle. Habits come first―results come later!

MONEY & THE BUSINESS OF LIFE
A Broad Overview of Financial Theory & Practice
Whether you’re in a corporate cubicle, on another non-profit fundraising drive, or just trying to keep your own business alive, you know the danger of avoiding money matters. At times it seems that life is a maze of work, happiness, worry, and money. We feel they are wrapped around each other in a stranglehold that can be suffocating. We also see certain people who navigate this maze with a smile and calm confidence. Most of what you should do is boring and won’t make the headlines. Your challenge is to do what is right and not get sucked into a system built on consumer spending. Many spenders have nothing to show for their life efforts and the sad part is that they choose to stay that way. This Griggs course looks at new and optimistic ways of handling money—and life!

ROLESTORMING FOR CREATIVITY & PRODUCT MARKETING
Brainstorming is Dead… Try Rolestorming
The Problem: Rolestorming originated as part of a fundamental flaw with brainstorming. Griggs observed that during traditional brainstorming sessions people would either run out of ideas or self-limit themselves for fear of reprisal, embarrassment, or ridicule. In 1985 he published, “A Storm of Ideas,” the first article on Rolestorming, in Training Magazine. Years later, MindTools featured it as one of the top creativity and problem-solving tool in the world. Rolestorming has spanned the globe and is now used in universities, corporations, and even countries (Honduras) as an innovative replacement for brainstorming.
Griggs’ Solution: Role-playing + Brainstorming = Rolestorming
A. Determine if the issue is an opportunity, a prevention, or a problem (O1-P2-P3). This "order of operations" is difficult if your style has been to always attack problems. A prevention solves 2-3 problems; A great opportunity resolves 10.
B. Assume/assign a role (saint, sinner, winner). Rolestorm from the new role.
C. Combine role-stormed items with brainstormed items. Number all items.
D. Vote on paper and tally all votes. Finalists advance to next round for discussion, and voting.
